#DeconstructingHome

#DeconstructingHome

Developed by FLOX Studio Inc., #DeconstructingHome is a year-long experimental traveling exhibition exploring the question, “How has our understanding and need for home, community, and place changed as a result of the year of isolation and suspension caused by COVID19?”

As many of us have spent much more time with the objects in our homes, this project - a combination of community design field research, creative collective inquiry and temporary public installation work, starts with an understanding of our intimate environment.

Community starts with our own homes, and then expands to consider how we relate to each other and the community institutions that create the sense of place as a home. Moving from our kitchens to our local food supply chain, from our collection of books to local libraries, and from our living rooms to our public squares.

#DeconstructingHome is as much about pulling apart as it is about understanding our collective need to reconstruct ourselves, our homes and the places where we live as the pandemic recedes.

Inspired by the experience of living in New York City during the earliest days of the pandemic -- this project seeks to hold space for dialogue and shared processing . As we begin to emerge from our corona cocoons - things are going to need to be different. And things already are.  Innovations in community design have flourished out of necessity since the start of the pandemic.

From the Corona Couriers to community fridges, from mutual aid networks to giving circles, communities across the 5 boroughs have sprung into action to ensure that their families, neighbors, friends, and colleagues have secure access to food, housing, and all the connections we need to survive hard times and thrive in good ones.

But what will these innovations mean for the longer term? How do our community institutions (foundations, municipalities, land trusts, food pantries, art, and cultural institutions, etc.) need to change? How can we begin to collectively assess and rethink the role & responsibilities of these institutions?

Join us , starting in March 2021 -- as we as a nation begin to emerge from our corona cocoons - on a 6 city tour (New Orleans, Oakland, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Brooklyn and Toronto) to collectively & publicly explore :

“What is community to us moving forward? What do we aspire to? What are we paving roads too? And how will we design our new futures -- together?”
